Why Hi-VIS?
As young people get older, what they want from activities and community can change.
Hi-VIS is being created as an age-appropriate space where blind and vision-impaired teenagers can meet people their own age, try new things, build confidence and have more say in the experiences available to them.
You shouldn’t have to constantly explain your vision.
You shouldn’t have to fit into a program designed for much younger children.
And you shouldn’t have to be sporty to belong.
Hi-VIS is about creating a place where you can be yourself
Hi-VIS Youth Connections is a new Blind Sports WA program for blind and vision-impaired young people aged 12–17.
Hi-VIS is about friendship, confidence, belonging, new experiences and having a place to connect with other young people who understand.
It won’t just be about sport.
Hi-VIS could include social activities, outings, camps, creative projects, cooking, gaming, technology, leadership opportunities, life skills and plenty of time just to hang out.
Most importantly, young people will help decide what Hi-VIS becomes.
We’re currently inviting blind and vision-impaired young people aged 12–17 to register their interest in Hi-VIS and tell us what they would like the program to look like.
The first step will be a Youth Co-Design Session, where young people can meet, share ideas and help shape the pilot.
There are no right or wrong ideas. We want to know:
what you would actually enjoy doing
what would make you want to come along
what would help you feel comfortable and included
when and how often activities should happen
what might make it difficult to participate
and what would make Hi-VIS feel like a community that belongs to you
Depending on what young people tell us, activities could include:
Sport & movement
Trying different sports, swimming, climbing, bowling, skating, fitness and recreation.
Social hangouts
Gaming, Dungeons & Dragons, movies, cafés, meals out and relaxed social nights.
Adventures & outings
Day trips, escape rooms, camps, outdoor activities and community events.
Creative activities
Cooking, art, music, photography, video, podcasting and technology.
Independence & skills
Travel skills, money skills, confidence, advocacy, leadership, planning activities and practical skills for things like getting a first part-time job.
And there is room for ideas we haven’t even thought of yet.
If you’re aged 12–17 and blind or vision-impaired, we’d love to hear from you.
You can register your interest now and help shape the first Hi-VIS Youth Connections program.
Your voice. Your program. Be part of it.
